Why is my PC showing a black screen after swapping CPUs?

I recently upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 5 5600X on my MSI 450 Tomahawk Pro motherboard. I updated the BIOS to be compatible with the new processor, and everything seemed to install correctly, but now I'm only getting a black screen. What could be causing this issue?

When swapping out CPUs, it’s common for the system to take a while to boot, especially if it needs to retrain the memory. Give it a solid 10-20 minutes to see if it sorts itself out. It’s also a good idea to clear the CMOS just to ensure there are no problematic settings, plus double-check all your connections inside the case to make sure nothing got knocked loose during the swap.

Will clearing CMOS erase my BIOS settings?

Make sure to turn the computer off for a bit before trying again. Also, it would be helpful if you could provide the full motherboard model for more tailored advice.

I can only recall it’s an MSI 450 Tomahawk Pro at the moment since it’s still stuck on the black screen.

After a CPU swap, it’s common to face a delay in booting, so be patient and wait it out. Also, if you’ve cleared the CMOS already, it might help to try starting the process again, avoiding unnecessary shutdowns.

What if I already did that and it’s still not working?

Definitely make sure you’re giving it enough time to POST. After a CPU swap, it can take a few minutes for everything to initialize. If it stays black for more than 2-3 minutes, something might be off. If you haven't already, try reseating your RAM and the CPU just to be safe. Also, check for any lights on the motherboard that indicate issues, and see if any fans or lights turn on when you hit the power button.

Yes, the motherboard has a blue backlight.
