Why is my PC stuck at 100 Mbps when I have a 500 Mbps connection?

I'm having trouble getting my PC to utilize my full internet speed of 500 Mbps. No matter what I try, it caps out at 100 Mbps. I've connected via ethernet, tested with a WiFi extender, and updated all my drivers, including those for my ASUSTek TUF B450M-Plus gaming motherboard. I even checked for any issues with my ethernet cable. I went into the device manager to tweak the speed settings, but nothing seems to work. I really want to avoid buying a new motherboard if possible, so any suggestions would be super helpful!

You might want to try a different ethernet cable. Even though your current one is rated for high speeds, sometimes faults can crop up. If you can, test your setup with another cable to rule that out.

Agreed! At this point, swapping the cable might be the simplest solution.

I had a similar issue when I upgraded my internet. After swapping out switches and rewiring, I discovered my motherboard couldn't handle the speeds and I needed a new network card. If all else fails, that might be worth considering.

Seems like a network card could be the answer if nothing else works.

Before diving into an expensive motherboard replacement, try getting a USB gigabit ethernet adapter. They're cheap (around $10-15) and can help you figure out if your motherboard's port is the issue. It's a quick test without a big commitment!

Yeah, I think this is a good idea! You can always return it if it doesn't help.

It sounds like your motherboard should be able to handle more than 100 Mbps. Double-check your adapter settings in the control panel—what's the speed showing there? It might be set to 100 Mbps for some reason.

It shows 100/100 Mbps, so it seems like it’s maxed out.

Is your ethernet cable capable of handling over 100 Mbps? If you're using a Cat8 cable, you should be fine. I’d check if it’s plugged in properly and test it with other devices to confirm it’s working as expected.

Yes, my Cat8 cable works great on other devices, just not on my PC.
