Why Is My RTX 5090 Crashing and Freezing?

Hey everyone! I'm dealing with some frustrating issues with my RTX 5090 Astral. It's been giving me random black screens and 5 to 6-second freezes, even when I'm just browsing simple websites or reading online news. I can always trigger this problem the first time I run A1111 and ComfyUI — they freeze, but after restarting, everything seems to go back to normal, and I can generate images without any problems. I've even trained LoRAs successfully!

The black screens and freezes come along with nvlddmkm events 153 and 14. I've run OCCT for 30 minutes with no errors. I'm not a gamer, so this is baffling. My setup includes a Thor Platinum 1200W PSU (using the included cable), an Intel 13900K CPU, 64 GB of RAM, and an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming Wi-Fi motherboard, all on Windows 11. I had an RTX 4090 in the same rig for a year with no issues.

So far, I've tried a bunch of things, including different HDMI and DisplayPort cables, rolling back to previous NVIDIA drivers, running the card at default settings, and even tweaking Windows video settings. I've changed so many options, I can't remember them all! I even edited the Windows registry, but reverted it later without any impact on the issues.

Does anyone have any ideas for what else I could try or if I've missed something? Thanks a ton!

Your PSU could be at fault here, even if it's a new 1200W model. I saw a similar situation when someone used the 5090, and it caused issues. They shared their experience in a post about event 153 problems on a forum. It could be worth looking into!

It might be a CPU issue rather than the GPU. I've heard that Intel's 13th and 14th gen chips can degrade over time, even if they released some fixes later. You should try running your PC without the 5090 and see if the problems persist just with the CPU.

That's a fair point. It could also be that the 5090 and 13900K just don't play nicely together. Maybe test the 5090 in a different system to rule out any compatibility issues?

But since the problems started only after switching to the 5090 from the 4090, doesn’t that suggest the CPU isn’t the culprit?

Have you tried limiting the CPU's Max state to 99% through Windows power options? This can sometimes help if there's degradation because it prevents the CPU from using full turbo speeds. I saw a streamer do this when they faced crashes with their 13900K, and it worked for them! It’s easy to try without messing with the BIOS, too.

How would that even affect the graphics card's performance?

I had similar issues with my 5090. Initially, I thought it couldn't be the PSU, but once I switched it out, all the problems went away. The instant shutdowns made me realize something was off with the power supply.

But if it was the PSU, why didn't I have any issues with the RTX 4090 for a whole year? Everything went haywire only after I installed the 5090!
