Why is my Ryzen 5 5600X PC so slow compared to my old laptop?

Hey everyone, I'm having a really frustrating issue with my main gaming PC. Despite having much better specs, it's incredibly slow, taking up to 3 minutes just to open basic programs like Paint or the file browser. In contrast, my older laptop opens these instantly! Here are some details: My main rig has an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, 32 GB of RAM, and runs Windows 10/11 with 227 GB used on a 2.29 TB drive. However, it has slow boot times and sometimes freezes randomly during use. Surprisingly, my older laptop, with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050, and just 16 GB of RAM, operates without these issues. I've checked the temperatures, updated all drivers, and scanned for malware, but nothing seems to help. I'm really stuck and hope you can provide some insights!

Ryzen CPUs can run hot, which might be throttling your performance. I had a similar problem until I repasted the CPU. It really helped! Also, if your boot drive isn’t an SSD, that could be a big factor in your slow performance.

I think your old laptop's SSD has a lot to do with its speed. If the new PC is still running on an HDD, consider replacing it with an SSD. It'll make a world of difference!

It sounds like you might have a hard drive issue. Check if you're using an HDD instead of an SSD for your storage – that could definitely slow things down. Also, ensure all your connections are tight; a loose cable might be causing the slowdown. You could also run a quick test by copying a 10MB file to see how long that takes.

Yeah, I've had bad cables before that caused similar issues. Also, if you’re using an NVMe, make sure it’s seated properly.

Have you considered reinstalling Windows? Sometimes a clean install can resolve performance issues like this. Just make sure to back up your files first!
