Why is my Ryzen 7 9700x hitting 97 degrees while gaming?

I just got a new system with a Ryzen 7 9700x and I noticed that my temperatures spike to around 96-97°C whenever I game. I'm using an Ocypus Iota L24 cooler, paired with a Gigabyte B650M gaming WiFi motherboard. The shop that built my PC mentioned connecting the pump to the CPU fan header and the radiator fans to the system fan header. I set the fans to run at maximum speed, but it still reaches those high temps. Even when I'm just browsing, the temps go up to 60°C, which feels too high. Any advice?

You should definitely check the pump RPM. Another thing is to remove the AIO and look at the thermal paste spread; it's crucial! Make sure to install it evenly when you put it back. Sometimes having an uneven application can cause high temps.

How would I check the pump RPM? And we already noticed the thermal paste spread wasn't the best, so we're planning to reapply with Arctic MX6 soon.

First things first, check if you removed the plastic covering on the thermal paste when you installed the cooler. It might also be a good idea to reseat the cooler to ensure a good contact with the CPU. As for the fan setup, you might want to consider running the pump directly from a system fan header to keep it always on, while the cooling fans can manage based on CPU temps. Also, reading through the user manual might help clear up any confusion!

Yeah, I did pull the AIO out partially and the plastic was off the thermal paste. But honestly, I’m not sure what to do about the pump header since the manual is a bit vague.

Going off what others have said, remember a pump header is basically just a fan header with a steady speed. If the plastic cover was missed, that's a big issue. You might also want to make sure the mounting hardware is installed correctly, as that can affect heat transfer. If everything seems fine but you're still reaching high temps, it could be that your AIO just isn't the best match for AM5 CPUs like the 9700X, which can lead to cooling issues under load. If all else fails, trying a different AIO designed for AM5 models might be your best bet.

I’ll definitely try repasting with something better and check the mounting again. The manufacturer says it’s compatible with both Intel and AMD, but I’ll keep an eye on that AM5 compatibility issue. Thanks for the heads up!
