Why is my second-hand laptop showing 27.7GB used after a factory reset?

I recently picked up a second-hand laptop from a pawn shop. It seemed alright during the inspection, but I didn't check the storage space properly. After I did a factory reset, I noticed that 27.7GB out of a total of 57.3GB is being used, and I'm trying to figure out if that's just system files or if there's something else going on. Can anyone help me understand this storage usage and whether there's a way to free up space?

Depending on the OS, a fully updated Windows 11 can take up to 34GB just for the main files. If you're not already, you might want to consider running Disk Cleanup to try and clear up some temporary or restore point files. Just don't expect to recover a lot of space.

That storage usage sounds about normal for what Windows needs, but if you're planning on doing anything other than basic surfing, you're going to hit limits fast. A program like TreeSize can help you identify what's actually taking up storage. Honestly, getting a bigger drive would be a smart move.

From what I know, Windows 10 or 11 can take up around 20GB. Plus, there might be swap files and hibernation files adding to that as well. It's not that unusual to have 30GB used just by the OS itself, but real talk: 60GB is outdated. They haven't made drives that small in over a decade!

Yeah, for a laptop that’s only got 57.3GB total, you’re looking at a tough situation if you want to store anything. 256GB SSDs are pretty affordable nowadays, so look into that after you check how much space is already in use.

That storage issue is pretty common with Windows. Your laptop likely has a 64GB SSD, which is definitely on the low side for modern systems. It's kind of cramped, so your best bet is to either upgrade the SSD or consider returning it for something with more space.
