Hi everyone! I'm having a frustrating issue with my internet speed for gaming, and I could really use your thoughts. I'm using BT Broadband in the UK and connected through Ethernet. Here are my recent speed test results:
- Download: 35.3 Mbps
- Upload: 6.13 Mbps
- Unloaded Latency: 13.9 ms
- Latency During Upload: 487 ms (!!)
- Jitter: Up to 313 ms
- Packet Loss: 0% (1000/1000)
- Test Server Location: London
- Connection: IPv6, tested around 11 AM
Even with decent speeds and no packet loss, the test rated my online gaming performance as "Poor." I'm definitely feeling the impact, especially when trying to prayer flick in OSRS; my inputs feel delayed and inconsistent, messing up my timing.
I'm already doing a few things right:
- I'm using Ethernet, not Wi-Fi
- I see no packet loss
- I'm experiencing high upload latency and significant jitter under load
- I'm not running any big uploads or backups during the speed test
Could this be due to bufferbloat, an issue with BT's routing, or something else? I'd really appreciate any insights or suggestions, especially if this points to hardware issues (like my router/modem), tweaks I can make (like QoS adjustments), or if it's something I need to escalate with BT. Thanks a ton!

It looks like your internet service might just be on the slower side, which ties into those high upload latencies and jitter. If you're paying for lower speeds, that could definitely impact your gaming. What speed plan are you on?
You've got some classic signs of bufferbloat mixed with slower connection speeds. If you're just gaming on one device, you might be okay, but if others are using the internet at the same time, that could definitely cause issues.
If the test server you're using isn't controlled by your ISP, that can affect your results too, especially if you're experiencing high upload latencies whenever you're under load.
Nah, it's to their server, which might be part of the issue.
Which speeds are you considering slow? My download seems fine.
