Why is my SSD so slow when updating games on Steam all of a sudden?

I've recently been experiencing a frustrating slowdown with Steam updates. It used to take just a couple of minutes for a 2GB update, but now it can take over 2 hours, even for smaller patches like the one for Baldur's Gate 3. My SSD's performance seems to be fluctuating wildly, dropping from as high as 2GB/s to around 50MB/s. I turned off disk write caching, which might have helped with the speed, but the patching is still extremely slow. This issue started when my wife got me a new external 4TB Sandisk WD_BLACK P10 SSD, and I've been downloading some games to it. However, Baldur's Gate 3 is on my D drive, which is a Crucial 2TB CT2000P3SSD8, and should be faster. Plus, my system diagnostics show the disk is at 100% usage while downloading. Interestingly, it seems like downloads are faster when I'm actually gaming. If anyone has any advice or insights, I would greatly appreciate it!

First off, check how much free space you have on your D drive. If it's more than 95% full, that could be causing some bottleneck due to flash wear issues.

I have about 129GB free out of 1.8TB. I could look into uninstalling something, but it’s been around that level for a year already.
