Why is my Wi-Fi showing low bars but my speed remains fine?

I've been noticing that my Wi-Fi signal strength has dropped to just a couple of bars recently, even though my internet speed hasn't changed at all. I use a Linksys USB Wi-Fi adapter while my router is in the basement connected to a cable modem, and I'm currently on the main floor on a 5 GHz connection. Both the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks show only two bars instead of the usual four. I've heard that low signal might lead to packet loss, which sounds concerning. I've already restarted both my modem and router but that hasn't helped. I'm running Windows 11 and would really love some insight into why this is happening.

Check how old your equipment is. If your router connects at slower speeds or you have an outdated cable modem, that could be impacting your signal. From my experience, old routers can limit speed, so if it's been a while since you upgraded, it might be time for a newer model. I had a mesh system installed that really boosted my speeds!

If your internet speed is fine and you're not experiencing lag or dropouts during activities like gaming or video calls, then it's probably not a big deal. Just keep in mind that for those situations, having full signal is ideal or you might prefer a wired connection for better stability.

Honestly, it could just be that your device didn't check the signal strength very often. Sometimes, you might notice a drop in bars, but if your internet performance is good, it might not be an issue at all. Trying to fix something that isn’t actually broken could lead to more trouble!

So if you're not dealing with any speed issues like downloads or uploads, I wouldn't stress about it. Another option is switching to the 2.4 GHz network, especially since the router's in the basement, since that band might penetrate through walls better.

You might want to consider a wired connection if it’s convenient enough. I know drilling through floors can be a hassle, but it usually leads to much better performance for gaming and streaming!
