I've noticed a trend in job postings where many sysadmin roles are mentioning Okta as their identity provider (IdP). This has me curious because my previous workplaces primarily used Microsoft or Google Workspace for single sign-on (SSO) and SCIM integration. I get that most businesses are looking to streamline SSO and automate onboarding/offboarding, but with Microsoft and Google being prominent players, why is Okta still dominant in the market? Should I consider learning Okta to boost my career prospects?

Okta was one of the first cloud-based identity solutions, which gave it a strong foothold. Once companies adopt a platform, switching is a huge undertaking. They also have extensive integrations with over 1,900 applications, making it super convenient for organizations to stick with Okta instead of changing to Azure AD or other options that might not have the same breadth of support.
The reality is that while Google Workspace is popular among small businesses, it's not really up to par for enterprise needs. Companies that grow out of Google often find themselves gravitating towards Okta. Plus, Okta streamlines workflows and makes managing complex app ecosystems easier, especially in hybrid environments.
From my experience, Okta is often seen as the gold standard for IdP due to its reliability. Unlike some other tools, most critical applications integrate easily with Okta, which is a huge plus for companies that don't want support headaches. Also, the ease of setup helps organizations keep operations running smooth.
I think a lot of the stickiness comes from having familiar user workflows. Okta is well-known for smooth integrations and usability, which translates into less resistance from staff who've been using it for years. Adjusting to a new system can disrupt productivity.
Migration from Okta to alternatives like Entra can be daunting. We've done it for some clients, and it took ages. Plus, many still find Okta easier to use, which makes switching a tough sell.

That's a valid point! Many startups start with Google for cost reasons and then face difficulties as they scale up. Okta provides a much more robust solution for enterprise-level identity management.
