I'm looking to upgrade my PC and I've noticed that RAM prices are through the roof! I've heard people saying that the AI boom is to blame for this surge, but I'm not sure where to find accurate information. Can anyone shed some light on why RAM has become so costly? Also, apologies for any grammar mistakes; English isn't my first language!

Basically, there's a bit of collusion happening among the top companies, driven by this heavy demand for AI. With only a handful of companies dominating the DRAM market, they control the supply really tightly.
AI data centers are consuming a lot of RAM, leading to supply shortages and skyrocketing prices. Manufacturers are also hesitant to produce more to avoid oversupply issues in the future, so prices are likely to stay high for a while. You might want to look for used RAM or wait it out.
The high RAM prices are largely due to tech giants ramping up their AI operations. They're buying up a ton of RAM for data centers that are focused on AI, which drives supply down and prices up.
Thanks for the insight! It’s just so frustrating trying to upgrade my setup.
The main players in the DRAM market are Samsung, Hynix, and Micron, and they produce mostly HBM for AI chips instead of regular consumer RAM. Since AI chips have better profit margins, they're prioritizing that. Experts believe we won't see prices drop until at least 2028 due to ongoing demand from new data center projects.
Interesting take! But I hope they don't repeat the oversupply mistakes from a couple of years ago.

I get that, but aren’t they technically still producing RAM? Seems like they’re just holding back production.
