Why is the 9070 XT performing worse than the 5070 and 5070 Ti in some games?

I'm considering upgrading from my 3060 Ti, which is paired with an AMD 5800X3D, primarily for gaming at 1440p with a 240 Hz refresh rate. I mostly play PUBG, but I also enjoy Rust, CS2, The Finals, and some single-player titles like RDR2 and Hogwarts Legacy. Recently, I found a video showing benchmarks where both the 5070 and 5070 Ti outperformed the 9070 XT in PUBG, which has me questioning if this performance gap is due to drivers or if it's genuinely significant in certain titles. I'm leaning towards the 5070 since it's cheaper at around $530 in Norway, while the 5070 Ti costs $820, and the 9070 XT is priced at $740. However, I'm also a bit concerned about VRAM and the potential extra performance of the higher-end cards.

Yeah, I've seen some benchmarks too, and it seems like Nvidia cards tend to have a better performance in games like CS2. But there are definitely some titles where AMD shines, like Call of Duty. It really does depend on the specific game you're playing.

I've switched from the 9070 XT to the 5070 Ti and in many cases noticed the Ti could be 30-50% faster in certain games. While the 9070 XT can catch up in popular titles, the average performance tends to be close. For the price difference, I think it's worth considering the 5070 Ti, but also check the pricing on the 9070.

If you're mainly focused on PUBG, I’d suggest you go with the most affordable card. That game really isn't demanding, so you could take the 5070 to save some cash.

I’d be careful about that video—it might be biased. Some well-known channels, like Hardware Unboxed, show the 9070 XT actually outperforming the 5070 Ti. It seems unlikely that the 9070 XT could do worse than the 5070 under normal conditions. The 9070 does also have a better memory capacity.

Game performance definitely varies. I’ve experienced Nvidia outperforming in Unreal Engine 5 games, but sometimes AMD does better. People worry too much about VRAM; I’ve been using a 5070 at both 1440p and 4K without issues, as my VRAM usage rarely goes high. Just keep an eye on benchmarks to help with your decision.

As a fellow PUBG player using the AMD 7900XTX, I can tell you the 9070 XT still performs well. I get around 320-400 FPS at 1440p. If Nvidia and the 9070 XT are similarly priced, I would lean towards Nvidia, but if not, go with the better value. 16GB VRAM is usually more than enough for most games at those resolutions.
