Why Isn’t Claude Code Using My Claude.md?

I've created a detailed Claude.md file, but it feels like Claude Code is totally ignoring it. Whenever I ask simple questions, it doesn't seem to acknowledge components from my folder where I keep reusable form elements. Plus, it seems oblivious to the react-query I'm using. Is there something I'm missing here? What's the point of having a Claude.md file if it doesn't take my project files into account?

Have you checked if Claude is actually reading your Claude.md? Make sure it’s in the correct location and named properly. That’s a good starting point to troubleshoot.

I had a similar issue yesterday. I asked Claude to update a data structure from an image reference to my Claude.md, but when I used it again, it generated something completely different! Try hitting Esc to interrupt it and instruct it to refer to Claude.md again. Also, using the plan mode might help.

Did you use the /init command? It might help set things up properly. Just a thought!

Honestly, Claude Code can be hit or miss. If it's not working out, you might want to check out alternatives like Cline.

Keep in mind that Claude may not have infinite memory. I had to refine my Claude.md to make it clearer and more efficient. After a few frustrating sessions, I wrote a code of ethics for Claude, focusing on collaboration and critical questioning. This helped improve the interaction a lot!

Try creating a command in your .claude/command folder called "context-prime.md." In it, write specific instructions as if you were guiding a real developer. This can be tailored for your whole project or specific workflows, and launching it can result in a much better experience.
