Why isn’t Find My iPhone working for my stolen phone?

A few months back, my iPhone was stolen while it was in airplane mode. I ended up falling for a scam message prompting me to enter my passcode, but thankfully, I didn't provide my Apple ID. Now, when I check Find My iPhone, it shows the phone is offline and doesn't display any last known location. I thought this might be due to the airplane mode. I activated Lost Mode hoping it would kick in when the phone goes online, but now, five months later, the phone still shows as offline, and Lost Mode hasn't activated yet. I'm puzzled as to what's going on.

It’s likely that the thieves removed your account and resold the phone. Once they have it, they can do a reset that prevents it from showing up on Find My iPhone.

Wait, they can actually do that without having the Apple ID?
