Hey everyone! I'm having a frustrating issue where every time I click the power button or the start button on my laptop, it just doesn't do anything. I can only shut down or suspend my laptop using the terminal. It used to work fine, but for some reason, it stopped responding. Just to clarify, I'm talking about the software power button, not the physical one.

It's actually not recommended to turn off your Linux system using the physical power button. If you press it for several seconds, it might force shutdown, but that’s not ideal. Depending on your desktop environment, there should be a way to configure what happens when you press the power button in your settings. Personally, I prefer shutting down through the control panel or my terminal.
Just a tip: when posting about technical issues, it’s always best to mention your distro, any hardware details, and error messages you might have encountered. It can really help others help you!
I finally solved my problem! I just had to restart my system via the terminal, and now everything’s back to normal. Thanks to everyone for being patient with me. I’m definitely the noob in this situation!
What desktop environment are you using? Also, which distro? Have you made any recent updates or changes to your system settings? That could be a factor.
It really depends on the desktop environment. If you're using Gnome, KDE Plasma, or something like Wayland, you might have options to choose what command runs when you hit the power button. You could try changing that command to see if it helps. If that doesn't work, consider reinstalling or using a Timeshift backup if you have one.

I’m using Mint.
