Why isn’t my mouse and keyboard working through my monitor’s USB ports?

I've hooked up my Windows laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI cable, and the display is working just fine. However, I plugged my external mouse and keyboard into the USB ports on the monitor, and they aren't responding at all. The laptop recognizes the monitor without any issues, and the monitor has USB ports that I assumed would function as a USB hub. Just to clarify, the mouse and keyboard work perfectly when plugged directly into the laptop. Does anyone know how to get them working through the monitor? Do I need to adjust any settings or possibly use a different connection type? Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds like you might need a USB connection between your laptop and the monitor to enable those USB ports on the monitor to work as a hub. Check if your monitor has a USB-B port; you would connect a USB-A to USB-B cable from your laptop to that port. Once that's done, your mouse and keyboard should start working seamlessly through the monitor's USB ports. Let me know the model of the monitor if you need more help!

The model is Dell U2422HE, but there’s no USB-B port on it.
