Why isn’t my updated GPO taking effect in Chrome?

Hey everyone! I manage the Group Policy for Chrome as our company's default browser, and I've recently changed the policy to update the URL for our company website. However, even though I can see the new setting in the registry at HKCUSoftwarePoliciesGoogleChromeRecommendedRestoreOnStartupURLs, Chrome still opens the old URL. I'm curious if anyone else has faced this issue and how it was resolved.

Sometimes, Chrome just doesn't update like you expect. If you've looked at the policies via chrome://policy and switched to a new profile to see the updates, you might be facing a local override issue. A lot of IT folks I know have switched to using managed bookmarks instead, which are harder to bypass and can help with the tab management. Just a thought!

Have you tried running a gpupdate /force? That can sometimes push through policy changes more effectively. Also, check if going to chrome://policy helps. You’ll be able to reload the policies there, and it should show if there are any issues with your GPO formatting. If issues persist, consider moving those settings to HKLM instead of HKCU; that can sometimes solve visibility problems in Chrome.

You might want to restart the computer and see if that helps! Sometimes, Chrome keeps its process in memory, which means it only reads the settings when it first starts up. A full restart usually makes sure all changes take effect because Group Policy updates generally need it. I've run into similar issues with other applications too.
