Hey everyone! I'm assisting a friend with his PC build and need some advice. He's currently using a 3060 12GB and wants to upgrade to a 5070 without changing anything else. His PSU is a 650W model, and while he initially looked at the 5060ti, we're all aware that's not the best choice. I've done some research and it seems like it could work with his current setup, but I'd love some external opinions before we make the switch.
Here's the current specs:
- CPU: 5700X3D
- Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming II
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 64GB (2x38GB)
- PSU: CoolerMaster MWE V2 650W Fully-Modular 80+ Gold
- Case: Deepcool MATREXX 55 V3 ADD-RGB Midi Tower
- Cooler: Arctic Freezer 7 X
- Storage: Kingston A2000 1TB M.2 2280
According to PCPartPicker, the total power consumption with an overclocked 5070 is around 540W. The manufacturer recommends a 750W PSU for the 5070, but I believe this 650W PSU should suffice. What do you all think? Has anyone done something similar?
Also, I noted that my PSU is rated B-tier on the SPL list, which suggests using at least a B-tier PSU for the 5070. Additionally, while the motherboard only has a Gen 3 PCIe slot, it's x16, so it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. The PSU also has enough cables for the GPU. Would love to hear your thoughts!

I wouldn’t directly recommend it, but it might work out fine. You pointed out that the total power draw is estimated around 540W, so it’s cutting it close, especially if the 5070 uses up to 249W under heavy load with an overclock. Just keep an eye on that!

Is your 5070 an overclocked edition, or do you just have the standard one with auto-tune active?
