Will Attending a Theory-Focused School Hurt My Job Prospects?

I'm currently studying at Caltech, where I'm double majoring in computer science and math. While the curriculum is rigorous, I've noticed we don't often apply the theories to real-world scenarios. I've participated in several research projects, but I'm seeking advice on how to prepare better for jobs at FAANG or in AI/ML. Should I prioritize summer internships to enhance the practical aspects of my resume?

Caltech is a fantastic name to have on your resume, and a theory-focused education can be beneficial, especially if you're considering a path in academia. However, if you want to work in software engineering, make sure you don’t lose sight of practical skills. Look for internships and work on personal projects that can demonstrate your practical know-how to future employers.

Learning theory isn't going to hurt you at all! The bigger issue is not gaining any practical experience. These days, just having a degree isn’t enough—employers want to see actual skills and experience to back it up.

I totally get that! I’ve also realized the importance of internships. I’m planning to start applying for some this fall.
