I'm considering a career as an embedded systems programmer for ISRO and want to know if software engineers in this field are at a lower risk of being replaced by AI compared to web developers or app developers. What are your thoughts on the job security for embedded systems programming as AI technology advances?

From my experience, it seems that AI struggles with C and C++ code, which are commonly used in embedded systems. Most of the sophisticated embedded work requires deep knowledge of custom hardware and existing libraries that aren't widely accessible. So I think embedded systems jobs will remain relatively safe for the time being. The AI tools might be useful, but they won't replace skilled programmers anytime soon.
The chance of AI completely taking over embedded systems programming seems low right now. Many real-time systems, like those in aviation or automotive, can't afford failures due to bugs, so human oversight is mandatory. Companies tend to be cautious about adopting new AI technologies in these sensitive fields.
AI is just a tool, really. Skilled developers will use it to enhance their work, just like they do with compilers and debuggers. It certainly won't eliminate the need for human oversight, especially in fields like embedded systems where rigorous testing and reliability are critical.
It's also worth considering that companies might try to push for AI adoption even if it won't be effective for fully replacing developers. There’s often a gap between AI capabilities and the actual needs of complex systems in safety-critical areas.
I actually worked in the automotive industry and witnessed how AI can lead to job displacement. It's a mixed bag, though—while companies might try to replace some roles with AI, the reality is that AI isn’t yet sophisticated enough to handle complex systems without substantial risk.
