Will I lose my data if I create a new Apple ID?

I recently erased my phone to clear up storage space, not realizing I'd need my old phone to access my Apple ID and iCloud. Now, I can't log into my Yahoo account because it's linked to my Apple ID and requires a verification app on my old device. I'm unsure what steps to take next. I wish I had changed my trusted phone number to a family member's before doing this. If I were to get my account back, would using a family member's number for verification work? How can I avoid issues like this in the future, especially since I've noticed that storage problems tend to come back?
