Will Upgrading My CPU Improve My FPS in Competitive Games like Overwatch?

I'm currently using an RTX 2070 Super and an Intel i7-9700F with 16GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM. Lately, my frame rates in Overwatch have been dipping below 200 FPS, even with all settings on low and the render resolution set to 80%. I have a 144Hz monitor, but the gameplay feels jittery, particularly during intense situations where it can drop to 160 FPS or less. I'm considering upgrading to an Intel i5-12600KF with a new motherboard in hopes of getting my FPS above 200, especially during heavy fights. However, I'm unsure how much of a performance boost this will really provide, as many benchmarks show much higher FPS but often with faster RAM and graphics cards. Any advice or insights would be appreciated!

For sure, but you might want to consider the newer Intel i5-13400F or 14400F as they perform similarly to the 12600KF. I've seen solid benchmarks that might make those a better bang for your buck!

The 14600K is also a strong option if you're aiming for high framerates, especially in gaming. Benchmarks show it's noticeably better than the 14400, but the difference lessens at 4K.

A fresh Windows install could also make a difference; it might restore some performance. The 12600KF will improve your average FPS and 1% lows. Remember, lowering the resolution can reduce GPU load, but there's no way to lighten the CPU load like that.

I doubt it will help much. FPS fluctuates due to constant updates, so just reinstalling Windows might not solve the overall issue.

An interesting alternative is to upgrade your monitor to at least 240Hz with G-Sync. Being around 160 FPS can cause stutter because of mismatched frame times with your monitor's refresh cycles. You might also want to try capping your FPS a few frames below 144; that often helps with optimal frame pacing.

That's a cool idea! I don’t have a G-Sync monitor, but I'll try capping my FPS a bit lower to see if it helps. Right now, I can’t afford a 240Hz monitor anyway.
