Will Upgrading to AM5 with 128GB RAM Hurt My Gaming Performance?

I'm looking to upgrade my setup to the AM5 platform mainly for 3D work, particularly simulation caching in software like Houdini and Cinema4D. I need a lot of RAM, which is why I'm considering the Crucial Pro 128GB (2x64GB) DDR5-5600MHz CL46 kit. While I know the timings are looser compared to some of the 6000MHz CL30 kits, I couldn't find a better 128GB option. My question is: how much will this affect gaming and latency-sensitive tasks in real-world scenarios? Does the AM5 platform manage high-capacity, higher-latency RAM better than the AM4 did? I'm really interested to hear from anyone who's used this RAM or something similar on AM5, especially in mixed workloads like 3D rendering and gaming. Here's what I'm planning to upgrade to: CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Motherboard: MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WIFI, RAM: Crucial Pro 128GB DDR5-5600 CL46, GPU: Palit RTX 5090.

You'll be fine! The performance differences with that RAM will be minimal at worst. Don't stress it too much!

Check out this video for some context: https://youtu.be/b-WFetQjifc?si=a291KxE7JPPY3DXN. Long story short: it’s not the end of the world. Plus, if you're gaming on a 4K monitor, your RTX 5090 will shine!

Cool, I'll definitely watch that. I'm still on a 1440p monitor, but planning for a 4K OLED.

You're definitely not screwed! Even if you aren't getting the highest gaming performance, it’s not the end of the world. While I'm sure there are better kits out there, you're still in a good spot with an X3D CPU. The G.Skill Flare X5 128 GB (2 x 64 GB) DDR5-6000 CL34 is another option, but remember, it’s not catastrophic if you don’t have the absolute fastest RAM.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check out the G.Skill option. My PCPP link shows the performance impact isn’t too bad after reviewing everything.

Using a 2-stick kit like yours should hit full speed without any noticeable hiccups. DDR5 has improved a lot for stability on AM5. If you had a 4-stick kit or were overclocking beyond 6200 MT/s, then yeah, you might have to tinker more.

It's nice to hear that 2-stick setups are stable! It makes me feel better about my choice.

Good news! With the extra cache on your X3D, RAM latency will have an even lesser effect than normal. I can't even tell the difference between 4800 CL40 and 6000 CL30 on my setup.

That's reassuring! I'm glad to hear the extra cache makes such a difference.
