I'm looking to revive three old smartphones to give to my kids, and I want to install a Linux distribution on them that isn't Android. Since I've never done this before, I could use some guidance on which distros would work and how to install them. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Just a thought—are you sure this isn't an XY problem? What are you hoping to achieve by installing a non-Android OS? It might help narrow down the options.

Good point! I just want them to be more educational and have access to different tools for learning.

If you're interested in something a bit different, look into Mobian. It's based on Debian and tailored for mobile devices. You can find more info on their site: mobian-project.org.

Keep in mind that there are limited options, and many mobile Linux projects only support specific phone models. You might run into compatibility issues with the smartphones you have, so check their specifications first.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely check the specs before diving in.

I think there's a Fedora Mobile project too, although I’m not sure how well it works on various devices. It's worth looking into if you're interested in Fedora-based options!

You might want to check out PostmarketOS. It's designed specifically for mobile devices and aims to provide a fully functional Linux experience on smartphones.
