I'm currently a sysadmin with a strong love for Linux and I'm looking to transition into a DevOps engineer role. I'm teaching myself and want to know how tough it is to get a job in this field. Do I really need certifications, or is there a different path I should focus on?

To get started, check out job listings to see the skills that employers are looking for. Make a list of those requirements, evaluate which ones you're comfortable with or can learn, and then focus on acquiring those skills. After that, start applying to jobs!
Certifications can definitely be beneficial, but they're not always necessary. Given your sysadmin experience, you should prioritize learning tools like Docker, Git, CI/CD, and Terraform. You might find practicing on platforms like DigitalOcean helpful. Also, resources like roadmap.sh/devops can guide you on what skills you need to focus on next.
I think that getting AWS Solutions Architect and SysOps certifications would be sufficient. Also, a lot of people underestimate Kubernetes; it's still widely used by many companies. Don't overlook it if you want to be competitive in the job market.
Haha, are you serious? Kubernetes is everywhere these days; it's hard to find a company that isn't using it!
