Thinking of Switching to Linux After Realizing Windows Tracks Me—Need Advice!

Hey everyone! So, today my laptop's fans started going nuts, and when I checked Task Manager, I found a bunch of Windows processes running in the background, like sending usage reports. Honestly, I remember declining all those things when I set up my laptop. It hit me that Windows has been tracking me for years, and that's when I decided to finally switch to Linux. I've heard about Linux but never considered it seriously since I'm not a coding expert. Now I'm hoping it might even encourage me to learn a bit about coding.

I'm planning to install either Nobara or Pop!_OS. Given my specs and what I want to do, do you think these options suit my needs? My laptop specs are:

- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060
- Intel i7 10870H @ 2.20GHz
- 16GB RAM
- Samsung 970 NVMe SSD (460GB)
- Killer WiFi 6 AX1650x
- Intel UHD Graphics (integrated)

What I'm looking for is:
- A smooth experience for streaming and using AI without lagging, especially since it currently takes forever to process even short videos.
- Better privacy with no sneaky background processes.
- A system that feels really smooth.
- A space to experiment and learn, especially in creative areas like modding and coding.

You might struggle with Knoppix since it hasn't been updated much and isn't great for everyday use. Instead, test out different distros with a Live USB to see what works best with your hardware. Learning Linux doesn’t require prior coding knowledge; immerse yourself and learn at your own pace!

I’ve used both Nobara and Pop! on my dual GPU laptop and they worked really well for me. While I can’t speak on streaming directly, they both should suit your needs without much fuss. I personally lean towards Nobara because it tends to have the latest updates, so you won’t have to hunt down additional repositories for newer software.

Nice! I’ve heard Nobara is pretty slick. I might give that a try, too.

Windows 11 has tons of telemetry, so you’re making a solid choice by switching. Nobara and Pop!_OS are both excellent options for your hardware. They simplify the installation of NVIDIA drivers, making it easier to get things running smoothly. I’d also suggest trying out Linux Mint if you’re looking for something that just works right out of the box. It’s super user-friendly and has a driver manager for quick NVIDIA installation after setup. Just keep in mind that with Pop!_OS, you’ll need to disable secure boot, but overall, you should be good to go!

Yeah, I agree! Mint is great for beginners. It feels familiar like Windows, so you won’t feel lost right away.
