I'm considering making the switch from Windows 10 to Linux Mint, and I'm looking for advice especially since I'm a beginner with limited tech skills. I mainly use my laptop for hobbies like creative writing, digital drawing/painting, and sculpting, plus I want to learn animation with my 3D models. I use Firefox, GIMP, Blender, and Sculptris, and while I know most of these work on Linux, I'm not sure about Sculptris. I'm also sick of the constant updates and bloatware with Windows and am intrigued by the privacy-friendly aspect of Linux. I want to know if making the switch is feasible for someone like me, what I should know before jumping in, and if I need to back up my files and programs first. Any big mistakes to avoid? Thanks in advance!

Linux is definitely a step up from Windows! The visuals on different environments like KDE, XFCE, and Gnome look really good and you’ll find alternatives for almost all Windows programs. It's great that you’re interested in Linux, especially with your focus on supported software.
If the games I play were available on Linux, I wouldn't even hesitate to switch!
I recommend getting an external SSD and setting up a dual-boot system. This way, you can keep Windows on one drive and install Linux on another, allowing you to switch back if needed. I found a video online that walks you through the process, just ensure you clarify which drive to choose during installation to avoid confusion. Dual booting lets you experiment with Linux without fully giving up Windows right away.
I’ll check that out! Dual booting sounds like a safer approach for me.
It’s a good safety net while you get accustomed to Linux.
Mint is super beginner-friendly! You might also want to check out other distros like Pop OS or ZorinOS for a more Windows-like interface. Yes, you can do the switch yourself as the installation guides are user-friendly, but I’d recommend playing around with a live USB first to make sure everything runs smoothly on your hardware. Oh, and definitely back up your files before making any changes!
Good point about the live USB – I’d suggest checking for compatibility before fully committing.
I like the sound of Mint, thanks for the suggestion!
The key things to be cautious about are executing commands with 'sudo' since that gives you root access, and ensure to document your experiences. Familiarize yourself with backup solutions like 'Deja Dup' for your important files. Learning those will help you avoid some common pitfalls. Switching can be a fun adventure, just take your time!
And remember, it’s okay to break things as long as you learn from them!
I'll definitely keep that in mind! Thanks for the heads-up.
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm leaning more towards making the switch.
