Is Using Porkbun for Domain and Email Forwarding a Good Idea?

Hey everyone! I just came across a method to buy a domain from Porkbun and utilize email forwarding along with SMTP to set up a custom email like [email protected] for free using Gmail. I'm curious — is this a practical solution, or are there any hidden issues I should be aware of?

I run Mailcast.io, and I can say this setup works really well! You get all the benefits of Gmail while using your own domain. Just make sure your domain is set up properly, and you shouldn't run into any problems!

Thanks! I’ll definitely check out Mailcast.io.

I actually do this by using Zoho as my SMTP server (which is free) while having my domain registered with Porkbun. It’s been working great for me!

While email aliases are generally free and easy to set up, I'm not a huge fan of Porkbun's email forwarding. They don’t support catchall addresses and start charging after you hit 20 emails. If you use Cloudflare for your DNS, you can actually create wildcard email forwarding which is a better alternative. Just keep in mind that using a custom domain can sometimes lead to spam issues, or might not be accepted everywhere. Overall, though, it can be a great setup!

Thank you for the insight!

Just a heads-up, as far as I know, SMTP service isn't free with Porkbun; only the email forwarding part is free.
