Can I Trace a Scammer’s IP Address from WhatsApp Messages?

Hey everyone! I recently got scammed on WhatsApp and lost a good chunk of money. I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to track the scammer's IP address using the messages and photos they sent me. I also have their phone number and details of the payment transaction. I'm hoping this info will help me file a police report. Any advice on how to proceed would be super helpful!

Sure! I think it was a crypto scam related to a love interest or something similar. Be cautious!

Make sure to file that report! Most scammers operate from other countries so it's tough to get your money back. A police report will at least document it and might help others avoid similar scams.

You won't be able to get an IP address directly from messages or photos on WhatsApp. They go through servers, which means you’d only see the server's IP. The only way to potentially grab an IP is if the scammer clicks on a specially crafted link, but that’s not exactly a reliable method. Just know that many scammers use tools to hide their IPs, so it's tough to trace them accurately.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense!

Exactly! IP tracking isn't what it used to be since messaging apps have improved their security.

If you're looking for an IP, keep in mind it might just lead you to a general area. If the scammer is using a VPN, you won't be able to do anything with the IP address anyway. The police can do more with the information you have, so definitely file that report!

Also, could you share how the scam happened? It might help others stay safe from similar situations.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is file a police report. It's their job to track down scammers. Trying to find an IP address isn't likely to help much. Even if you get it, the scammer might just be using a VPN, which renders the location pretty useless.
