I have an older Asus X455L laptop that's about 9 years old. It comes with an Intel i3 5th generation processor and an NVIDIA 920M graphics card. I'm looking for recommendations on which Linux distribution would work best for me.

If you're just starting out with Linux, Mint is a solid choice! It's user-friendly and has a lot of support for beginners. Plus, it tends to run pretty smoothly on older hardware.
You should try a few different desktop environments. For gaming or general use, maybe go for KDE Plasma or XFCE since they're lightweight and pretty polished. Have you thought about trying a live distro first to see what you like?
That’s a great idea! Live distros help you test before committing to an install.
Honestly, almost any distro should work fine on your hardware. If you want something really light, Debian with XFCE is great. But if you’re after a more polished experience, consider Zorin OS Lite or Ubuntu MATE.

Yeah, Mint's really good for newbies! I started with it, and everything worked right out of the box.
