Affordable Website and Hosting Solutions for Starting a Food Resource Locator

I'm trying to create a budget-friendly website that helps people find low-cost or free food resources in their area. The goal is to allow users to register local food banks, backyard produce, local farms, and small food pantries, so all the options are easily accessible in one spot. In the future, I also want to include online ordering and checkout capabilities. Can anyone suggest platforms or resources that would support this kind of setup? I would greatly appreciate any advice or information you might have. Thanks!

Are you open to building the site yourself, or do you prefer to use a site builder?

Definitely a site builder for now. I’m looking for something that can also be easily migrated if needed later.

For a food finder website that includes map functionality, check out these options:

- **WordPress with the MapPress plugin**: This setup can cost about $5-10/month for hosting from places like Bluehost or SiteGround, and MapPress has a free version for basic maps.
- **Wix**: Their basic plan is $16/month and it includes easy Google Maps integration, perfect for beginners.
- **Google Sites**: This is completely free and lets you embed Google Maps, but it has limited customization options. Good for starting out.
- **Webflow**: A more powerful alternative than Wix, costing around $16/month with map capabilities.

For the food registry, ensure you have some form functionality, which all these platforms support. If you're looking at future checkout options, WooCommerce (for WordPress) or Shopify Lite embedded would work well. If you're comfortable with a little learning, start with WordPress; otherwise, Wix is super user-friendly.

This is very helpful, thank you! I was worried about potential Google Maps API costs, so I'm glad to have alternatives.

I highly recommend using the WordPress platform for your needs. It's versatile and has a lot of plugins designed for user-submitted content and online ordering, which can keep costs low for your project. Just be sure to choose WordPress.org instead of the limited WordPress.com, as the latter won't have all the features you need.

Thank you!!
