My iPhone 17 Pro Max screen is black and unresponsive—any fixes before I go to Apple?

I recently bought an iPhone 17 Pro Max through an EE contract, and while I was watching a video, the screen suddenly went black and stopped responding. I've tried force restarting it, and I do feel the haptic feedback, but there's no Apple logo appearing. My earphones still connect, and the phone is fully charged. I haven't dropped or damaged it at all. Is there a solution I can try that doesn't involve taking it to the Apple store?

Honestly, if your phone is still under warranty, I’d recommend taking it in. There’s no reason to skip that option. They should cover any defects for free, especially since this sounds like a potential manufacturing issue. Just make sure to mention that this isn’t normal behavior.

I had something similar happen to me. My haptics worked, calls came through, but the screen was just black. It turned out to be a bigger issue, and after a few attempts to fix, they had to replace a module in the end. It’s frustrating because they initially claimed they hadn’t heard of this problem before, even though it seems common online. Just keep pushing for a resolution if they try to charge you for defects.

Have you possibly turned on Screen Curtain? It’s a feature that can completely turn off the display. You can toggle it using three fingers but check Apple’s support page for specific instructions. If that’s not it, you might need to do a full force restart: press the volume up button, then the volume down button, and hold the side button for about 15 seconds until you see a restart. If nothing works, it’s likely a deeper issue with the screen or backlight.
