I'm curious about why certain Azure services still use the windows.net domain. Given that Azure is a distinct offering from Windows, it seems a bit strange. Could someone explain the reasoning behind this choice?

It's primarily a legacy issue. When Azure was first launched, they chose easy-to-manage domains like windows.net. Now that the platform has grown, rebranding those domains would create a lot of confusion and disrupt current users.

It's a bit of history. Azure was once labeled as Windows Azure, and it seems they decided to keep using the windows.net domain instead of moving to something new. It’s one of those things where change can break existing setups, so they kept the old names.

The reason behind Azure using the windows.net domain goes back to its origins. Initially, it was called "Windows Azure," and all their domains were windows.net. As Azure evolved, they stuck with those domain names because they were already widely used, and changing them would risk breaking existing services for users.

It might help to provide specific examples of services that use this domain. For instance, Storage Accounts are a good example since they use core.windows.net. This can illustrate the persistence of the domain across different Azure offerings.
