I've noticed that every 4 to 5 seconds, my network usage spikes between 8 to 64 KBPS. The only program I have running in the background is Discord, with nothing else opened. Is this type of network activity normal, or should I be worried that I might have a virus? Am I just being paranoid?

It's totally normal to see those kinds of network spikes! Many background programs, including Windows services, can cause this. Discord often checks for messages even in the background, so that might be what's happening here. Unless you're seeing other weird behavior or know you've downloaded something suspicious, you should be fine.
What leads you to think it's a virus? Other than Discord, a lot of background services might be running and using your network. Just those small checks and updates can create activity like that.
I feel you on the paranoia! I looked at something and immediately freaked out thinking my system was compromised. The spikes in activity during idle times can be unsettling, but it might just be your standard background processes at work.
