Why Does My CD-R Drive Keep Disconnecting but Works with DVDs?

I've been having a strange issue with my external CD-R drive. I bought it recently to burn some CDs for my car, which doesn't read DVDs. The drive works perfectly fine with DVDs, allowing me to read and write without any problems. However, whenever I insert a CD-R, the drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting all the time, making the Windows sound for connecting and disconnecting devices repeatedly. This happens even though the drive shows up in file explorer when there isn't a CD-R inside, and it disappears as soon as I insert one. I'm using Windows 11. I read that this could be a power issue with the USB port, but I'm not sure. If anyone has ideas, I'd appreciate your help!

It sounds like there might be a power issue with the USB port. I’ve heard similar things where the front USB ports don’t provide enough power for external drives. Try plugging it directly into the back ports of your motherboard; that often helps.

I actually did that after reading similar advice, and it worked perfectly on the back port! Thanks for the tip!

Your drive might just be cheaply made or have firmware issues. If it keeps disconnecting like that, it’s best to reach out to the manufacturer to see if they have a firmware update or any suggestions to improve compatibility.

I contacted support, but while waiting, I tested it on my laptop and it worked just fine. So, I dug a bit deeper and found the power issue was the culprit!
