Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on a situation I'm running into while traveling abroad. I want to make sure that my streaming services and potential job applications recognize my USA residential IP address, even when I'm using my travel router while I'm away. Is there a cost-effective way to achieve this without relying on a traditional VPN client? I've heard that I might need to buy specific travel routers for this solution, but I'm a bit confused about the details. If anyone has experience with this or can provide a breakdown of how it works, that would be super helpful. Thanks a lot!

You'll probably have to use a VPN for this. If you're wary of traditional VPNs, Tailscale might be the easiest solution. It can run on various devices and notifies you when devices connect. By designating your home machine as an exit node, all your data will seem like it's coming from your home IP. The travel routers from gl.inet are great for this purpose since they have Tailscale pre-installed. Just set it up to route all traffic through your home network when you connect!
One option is to use SSH to connect to your home computer remotely. This method allows for graphical access to your home machine. If you want something more robust, you could set up OpenVPN or WireGuard; both have mobile clients available, making it easier to connect while you're away. Just make sure your home PC is on when you need access!
What do you mean by "home box"? Also, any tutorials on how I can set this up myself? Would I need to keep a laptop running back home while I'm traveling? Thanks!
If you set up remote access to your home PC, then any online requests will appear to originate from there. Just ensure that your home computer stays connected to the internet for this to work properly!
Do I need a laptop that's always connected to my residential Wi-Fi for this to work? Thanks!
Just a heads-up, depending on your job, pretending to work from home while overseas could breach your employment agreements. My employer has strict rules about this, so it might put you and your job at risk if caught. Just something to think about!
I understand your point. However, I believe that if I maintain my legal residence, it won't be an issue. Besides, I mentioned it's for possible job scenarios. Thanks for your input!
What you really want is a VPN setup where you can connect back home. It could be set up on a Raspberry Pi or a cheap computer that'll act as your VPN exit node. That way, no one will know any different! It really just looks like you’re at home using the internet. Plus, you can even access services like Plex without hassle.
How can someone detect that I’m using a setup like this? What’s the process?

I’m okay with installing software/hardware. I just want to avoid detection through conventional VPN services. You mentioned that I could run this through my main router. Would I need one or two travel routers from gl.inet to get it all set up?
