Is the GTX 1060 a Good Choice for a Budget Build in 2025?

Hey everyone! I've made the classic mistake of spending most of my budget on PC parts and now I need a graphics card. I'm aiming for some low-end gaming on a budget, and I currently have a used GT 1030 that I got for around $30. I found a used GTX 1060 for about $66. Given that I primarily play older games from before 2020 and sometimes want to dip into newer games at lower settings, I'm wondering if the GTX 1060 is worth it, or should I hold out and save for something newer? For reference, new graphics cards are pretty pricey here in India—a brand new RTX 3050 is around $210. My specs are an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 24 GB RAM, and I'm running Windows 11. I mainly use my PC for heavy web browsing, YouTube, and some nostalgic low-end gaming. What do you think?

The GTX 1060 should handle pre-2020 games without much trouble. For more demanding newer titles, though, it might struggle. I'd also suggest looking into alternatives like the RX 580 or GTX 1070 if you can find them for a similar price. By the way, the RTX 3050 isn't a great choice at that price; just steer clear!

Thanks for the solid advice! I appreciate it. The 3050 price is actually after a big discount, and it's still steep compared to other options.

I’m currently running Cyberpunk 2077 on a GTX 1070 and it works well for me. Most of the games I want to play don’t require that much power, so if you can snag a 1070 or RX 5600, that might be worth considering too!

That’s good to hear! Since only a few of the games I want need heavy graphics, I'll definitely keep an eye out for a 1070 or the 5600 as others suggested.

I picked up a GTX 1060 6GB for about $60 CAD and sold it for $80 CAD later. While it's okay now, it's nearing the end of its life, which might cause issues with compatibility on newer systems down the line. If you're going for a budget build, just make sure to look at how long the card has been in use.

I've been using the GTX 1060 3GB with decent results. It runs many games at 60fps, but if you're targeting newer titles, it's necessary to play on lower settings. A key issue is its limited VRAM, which can lead to performance drops in some games. I'd recommend considering newer budget cards or a used RX 5600 if they're in the same price range. Just be cautious about how long the card has been used—I've seen some wear in mine since I got it. It might not be the best investment for the long term at that price.

Your insights are super helpful, thanks! I need something that can still play older games well since I’ll only have a couple of months for gaming before starting work. If I can’t find a better option, I might just go with the 1060 and eventually pass it on to my cousin.
