How Can I Connect My Router to Wi-Fi Without a Modem?

I'm trying to get my PayCom time clock device to connect to a router, but I don't have a modem. The building has Wi-Fi, but there's no ethernet port in my office. I'd like to know how to connect my router to the building's Wi-Fi so I can use an ethernet cable with my PayCom device. I'm not very tech-savvy, so any straightforward tips on achieving this would be really helpful!

You might want to look into Wi-Fi extenders that support a client mode. These devices can connect to Wi-Fi and bridge the connection to your wired devices. It's not the most common option, but it worked for me a few years back with a Netgear extender when I had access to shared Wi-Fi in an apartment.

Check if your router has an Access Point (AP) mode. You would set it up to connect to the building's Wi-Fi, and then you can plug your PayCom device into it using an ethernet cable. If your router doesn’t support that, you might need to buy a dedicated AP or even a router that can operate in that mode. You can find models that have 'Wi-Fi bridge' capabilities.

If your desktop is connected to Wi-Fi, you can actually share that connection with your PayCom device. You'd need to set up a bridged connection on your Windows PC to share your Wi-Fi over Ethernet. Just go to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, go to Properties > Sharing, and enable sharing to your Ethernet adapter. It's a neat way to turn your PC into a mini router!

A common solution for connecting Wi-Fi to wired devices is using a Wi-Fi bridge. Many routers can be configured for this, but it can be tricky depending on the model. If you're using a bridge device, configuration might involve a web interface or pushing a WPS button. Make sure to find one that supports connecting to another Wi-Fi network, as not all APs can do that.

If your PayCom time clock has built-in Wi-Fi, you might not even need a separate router. Just connect it directly to the building's Wi-Fi. But if it only takes an ethernet connection, consider a wireless ethernet bridge, which can link your Wi-Fi to ethernet for a single device.
