I had Linux Mint set up nicely, but I recently installed Windows 11 on the same internal SSD to dual boot. Now, when I tried to boot back into Linux Mint, I was greeted with a black screen. So, I ended up reinstalling Linux Mint from an external SSD. After that, when I reinstalled Steam, I found that I had lost all my Steam files and game save data. Did I totally mess things up, or is there any hope for recovery?

A big rule of thumb for dual booting is to always install Windows first, then Linux. Windows can mess with other operating systems, so it’s safer that way.
Most games save progress to the Steam cloud these days, so there’s a chance your save files are still there. It’s not guaranteed, but I'd bet some of your saves will be waiting for you once you reinstall those games.
If you’re planning on dual booting, having two separate drives is a solid approach. Windows tends to complicate things for other OSes.
Reinstalling Linux Mint might have wiped your old installation and its files. It’s often better to fix boot issues instead of reinstalling. And remember, a separate SSD for each OS can save a lot of headaches.
