How to Plan My Computer Science Career Without JEE?

I'm currently in 12th grade in India, and after initially preparing for JEE, I realized that it's not for me and stopped halfway through 11th grade. I have basic skills in Python and MySQL, and I'm interested in pursuing Computer Science or IT. I'm looking for advice on the following: What entrance exams should I consider aside from JEE, like CUET or state CETs? Which degree programs, such as BTech, BCA, or BS, are better for CS, especially at government colleges? Lastly, what job opportunities can I expect after completing these courses? I'd appreciate insights from anyone, especially those who have taken a non-JEE route into this field.

Good on you for recognizing early that JEE wasn't your path! Most states have CETs that are less competitive than JEE, allowing access to decent programs. While a BCA can be great, I’d advise considering a BTech or BS in CS for more flexibility, especially if you might want to look into research or grad school later. A tip: focus on building something for your GitHub—small tools or scripts can really showcase your skills and are often valued more than just a high GPA during interviews!

CUET is definitely your best bet for getting into good central universities. It's much less competitive than JEE but can still lead you to solid programs. For state CETs, it really depends on your state, but most offer decent CS options. When it comes to BCA versus BTech, it’s really a matter of preference; BTech might hold more weight in the industry, but a BCA combined with an MCA can be just as valuable if you choose the right colleges. Generally, job prospects are similar across these paths—think software development, web development, data analysis, and cybersecurity. Your skills and projects will matter way more than the specific degree you have!

A BTech in CSE from a decent state government college through state CET is a great path for a mix of brand recognition and job placements. BCA can be a solid alternative too, but it often leads to needing an MCA afterward. Just a heads-up, though—getting good dev jobs for freshers has gotten tougher these days compared to before.
