Experiencing Frequent Network Disconnects After Setting Up Hyper-V: What Could Be Wrong?

I recently created a virtual machine running Ubuntu 22.04 for development purposes and set up an external virtual switch in Hyper-V for networking. Since then, I've been facing issues with my Ethernet adapter disconnecting frequently—it's gone from disconnecting 1-3 times a day to 3-6 times an hour, especially when under load. Surprisingly, the problem persists even after shutting down the VM and removing the virtual switch. I've tried reducing the link speed and resetting the network adapter, but the problems remain. Additionally, both my Ethernet connection and 2.4GHz WiFi signal drop simultaneously, while the 5GHz network stays stable. I'm beginning to wonder if the configuration change in Hyper-V affected my network settings. What could be causing these issues?

Hyper-V shouldn't be the root cause here. It seems like your adapter is flaky, perhaps because it's a consumer-grade NIC. Consider using a dedicated network card for the VMs if possible. Mixing functions with the same adapter can lead to weird issues, too.

I haven't run into reliability issues with Hyper-V in over ten years, so it’s probably not the hypervisor’s fault. Just to clarify, did you set up the networking with the default switch? Sometimes it leads to unexpected behavior.

I had a similar issue after a Windows Update; the NIC would drop continuously. Removing Hyper-V resolved the connection problems for me. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date and check for any leftover virtual switches or configurations that could still be active.

If this issue only started after creating a VM, it’s likely not just a coincidence. The NIC could be struggling under the new setup. I suggest looking into getting a network card that supports SR-IOV to avoid these sharing issues in the future.

It sounds like your network adapter might be having issues—could be related to the drivers or the hardware. Hyper-V is generally good at sharing adapters, but if your network hardware isn't really up to the task, that's when problems start creeping in.
