I'm a bit of a digital hoarder and can't bring myself to delete old files, especially photos and videos. My collection has ballooned to 50GB, but I only have 1GB left on my phone and it's not synced to the cloud. I'm worried about losing everything if my phone breaks or gets lost. I've started copying my media to a USB drive, but the quality when viewed on my laptop isn't great. I'm transferring from an iPhone to a PC and am concerned that the quality loss might be related to the data transfer process or my laptop's ability to handle the files. Can anyone suggest the best way to store my pictures and videos while keeping their quality intact, without relying on cloud syncing? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you're sorting out the quality issue first. If your photos look bad on your laptop, setting up a backup process wouldn’t help. Check if your iPhone is set to save images as JPEG rather than HEIC, as that can affect compatibility! Here are the steps to change it:
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll and tap Camera.
3. Tap Formats.
4. Choose 'Most Compatible' for new photos.
I recommend syncing your files to a computer and then regularly copying them to an external hard drive. This should maintain the quality just fine, unless you’re doing any sort of conversion. Also, if you have Amazon Prime, consider using their photo storage feature—unlimited storage for photos and a decent limit for videos can really help!
I use a 3TB external hard drive to back everything up. I also make a copy to a second drive just for peace of mind. Automating it might be complex, but it's worth the extra step for safety.
I totally get the struggle with storage! One thing to consider is going through your media and deleting duplicates or less desirable pictures. My wife uses an app that works like a dating app for photos. You swipe to keep or delete—she managed to free up 8GB by culling thousands of photos!
One solid option is to set up a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system at home. It's like having a private cloud server—great for storing all your media without involving any third-party companies. You can even build your own NAS with a regular PC or buy one from brands like Synology. It can hold multiple hard drives and you can sync your devices to it as well!
So it's similar to a cloud service but totally private? That sounds appealing!
How safe is a NAS, though? Are they secure from outside threats?

Good point! Sometimes our phones have better screens which can impact how we view those files.
