I have a Sony Vaio P788K that struggles to run Windows 7 smoothly, and I'm considering switching to Linux since Vista is also too slow. This is my first time using Linux, and I'm looking for a lightweight distro that can work well on older hardware. Any recommendations?

Bodhi Linux is another great option. It doesn't feel stripped down and has a very nice interface. I’ve had a good experience with it on older machines. A lot of people say it runs really well, even on weaker hardware.
For a solid user-friendly experience, try AntiX Linux in its 32-bit version. It's based on Debian but designed to be more accessible for users. Since your laptop relies on x86 instructions, this could be the best route to go.
If your laptop is extremely old and you're a beginner, I’d suggest Lubuntu or Xubuntu. They’re user-friendly and quite lightweight. If you're more experienced, Arch Linux can be a good minimal setup if you want to tweak everything.
MX Linux has worked wonders for me on my older devices. I've used it on a 2011 MacBook Air with 4 GB of RAM and it runs smoothly. You might also want to check out AntiX—it's designed for old hardware and should fit your Vaio perfectly.
Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop environment works great on my old Lenovo T61. It’s super user-friendly and doesn't drain system resources, perfect for a slow laptop!
