Can a server access the internet without being directly online?

I'm trying to wrap my head around something my husband mentioned regarding his server. He said that it can access the internet but isn't actually considered 'on' the internet. This feels really confusing to me. Could someone break this down in really simple terms? I'm not very tech-savvy and would appreciate any clarification.

There’s also a chance he might have some kind of Bluetooth or direct Wi-Fi link to another device that connects to the internet. Just a thought!

Um, that's a pretty unlikely scenario, but who knows?

I think the easiest way to verify this would be to just ask him for more details about how everything is set up. He’ll probably have the best explanation for you!

It sounds like your husband’s server is behind something called NAT (Network Address Translation). This means it can send out requests to the internet, like browsing or downloading updates, but no one on the internet can initiate a connection to it directly. It's a common way to keep devices safer from external access.

Exactly! NAT is a great way to protect devices while still allowing them to access online resources.

It could be that the server is connected to a local network but isn’t set up to connect to the internet directly. You know, like a private network where devices share resources without being exposed to the internet.

Another possibility is that he’s using a proxy server. That way, his server can send and receive internet traffic through another server without being directly exposed.
