Is It Safe to Use an Extension Cord with a UPS for My Modem and Router?

Hey everyone, I have a quick question about using an extension cord. I'm planning to plug my modem and router into it and then connect that to my UPS. I need to do this because the locations of my router and modem are a bit far from my UPS. Will this setup work without causing any interruptions? Thanks!

Just a heads up, some people might say that modems and routers shouldn't actually need to be on a UPS. You might want to think about getting a dedicated one for that if you really need to keep them powered during outages.

As long as your extension cord is rated for the load over that distance, you’re fine. Just make sure it can handle the pull. It’s only about 2.5 meters, so there shouldn't be any issues with degradation.

Another option is to get a smaller UPS specifically for your modem and router. That way, you can avoid routing an extension cord. I have a compact UPS near my electrical panel to power my ONT while my router benefits from a larger UPS on my desk. Just makes things neat!

It should work just fine! Just make sure the extension cord isn't damaged and try to avoid covering or enclosing it. Since your load is so low, it won't be a problem at all.

You really shouldn’t have any issues. The power needs of both the modem and router are pretty minimal, so you’re good to go.
