Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my current PC instead of building a brand new one. I'm currently in Colombia, and importing a whole new system would cost me around $2000 USD after taxes and import fees, which is pretty steep. Local prices are even worse, so I'm hoping to extend the life of my current setup by upgrading only the key components. My current system includes a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU, MSI B350 Tomahawk motherboard, 16GB DDR4 RAM, GTX 1060 6GB GPU, and a 550W PSU. My plan is to keep the motherboard and RAM and upgrade to a 750W Gold PSU and an RTX 5070 GPU first, then later switch to a Ryzen 7 5700X once I update the BIOS. I'm aiming for decent 1440p gaming performance without breaking the bank. So, I'm wondering if the Ryzen 7 5700X with the RTX 5070 on a B350 board is a good idea? How significant will the bottleneck be compared to a modern platform? And would you suggest any alternative CPUs on AM4? Looking forward to hearing from anyone who's upgraded old AM4 systems! Thanks!

I’d recommend looking into a B550 motherboard for some newer features. It might help you out down the line, though it's not necessary for this upgrade. Most of the performance gains will come from your CPU and GPU switch.
Your upgrade plan sounds solid! Just make sure you update the BIOS first to ensure compatibility with the Ryzen 5000 series. It's a good idea to stick with your old CPU while doing the update since there's a slim chance you might lose compatibility with it during the process. You might experience some limitations with the CPU in demanding situations, but at 1440p, it shouldn't be too bad. Your current CPU will definitely bottleneck the GPU until you upgrade to the Ryzen 7, though.
I appreciate the detailed advice! That helps a ton.
I've got a similar setup with a Ryzen 5700X on a B350 mobo paired with a GPU close to the RTX 5070. I'm telling you, it’s totally worth it. Go for it!
Thanks a lot! That's encouraging to hear.
Why not go for the Ryzen 5600X instead? It’s a great choice, and you could allocate more of your budget towards the best GPU you can find that fits. Just check if the 5600X can handle the RTX 5070 without issues!
Thanks! I’ll consider the 5600X. Can it support all graphics cards, especially the 5070?
I wouldn't stress about the B350 board; using the Ryzen 5700X and RTX 5070 should be fine, especially for 1440p. Just make sure you've got that 750W PSU!
Great, thanks for the reassurance!
Just keep the Ryzen 1600 around for now; it can still be useful while you transition to the new parts. No need to mess with a new board just yet!
Honestly, I think your original board will handle these upgrades just fine. It's really about getting the most out of the CPU and GPU without needing to switch boards at this point.

What features would I get with a B550? Is it worth the switch?
