Why Can’t I Install a Game with 100GB Free Space?

I have 181GB of free space on my C drive, and I'm trying to install Monster Hunter: World Iceborne (MHWILDS), which is about 97GB. However, when the download reaches 90%, it stops and tells me the drive is full. I've cleared some files and organized my storage, and I'm aware that I need to keep 40GB free for system functions. Am I missing something here?

What type of drive are you using—HDD or SSD? If it's an SSD and it's old, part of it might be functionally damaged, leading to unusable space. You can check the health of your drive using a tool like CrystalDiskInfo to see if it's in good shape.

It sounds like you might not have enough space for the install process itself. When installing large games, you often need double the game's size as temporary space for downloads and unpacking. So, even though MHWILDS is 97GB, you might need 150GB to 200GB available at the start. Try clearing more files to see if that helps!

This issue could be due to Windows running out of temporary space during the installation. Big games unpack a lot more than their final size. Consider clearing your temporary folders or even moving your Steam library to a different drive that has more space available.
