How Do You Organize IT Supplies for Your Car?

I'm on the road a lot for my job and I keep running into the issue of needing a wide range of IT supplies, but they don't fit well in my backpack or tool bag. I've experimented with a plastic bin from Costco, but it's become a chaotic mess with cables and adapters all mixed together. I'm looking for better ways to organize my supplies when I travel to client sites. I typically need Ethernet cables of various lengths, various display cables and adapters, power cables, PoE injectors, gigabit switches, small UPSs or surge strips, and USB cables — you get the idea. I drive a Subaru Outback and usually have the back seats up with the bin cluttered in the trunk. So, how do you all keep your IT supplies organized in your car? What essentials do you recommend I add to my kit? Keep in mind, I live in a remote area where going back to the office isn't a quick trip. Some clients are a couple of hours away!

Have you considered a modular tool storage system like the DeWalt Tstak or Craftsman Versastack? They’re rugged and can be stacked or rolled out. I use a rolling box for my cables and tools, and it doubles as a cart to bring everything on-site. It’s a lifesaver for organization!

Have you thought about using packing cubes? They're great for keeping everything organized when you're on the go, just like when you travel. It sounds like the bin is the issue because everything gets tossed around. If you separate your supplies into smaller, labeled cubes, it should help you find things faster!

Honestly, carrying all that stuff seems like overkill. I get that you want to be prepared, but having a UPS and multiple switches might not be necessary unless requested by your client. I used to carry only the essential adapters and cables, and if I ever needed anything else, I’d grab it from the office or local store. Just keep it simple!

Exactly! I did the same thing when I was working with multiple clients. I kept a small kit of essential adapters and some common cables, but I left the heavy gear back at the office. Nobody expects you to have everything unless they ask.

I totally vibe with the Milwaukee Packout system. It’s kind of rugged and can be tailored to what you need. Plus, it has a bunch of compartments which can help keep your supplies sorted and easy to access. Check it out!

Since I drive a pickup, I use plastic bins too. Organizing them by category helps! Also, I recommend having extra external USB drives handy – they're lifesavers for unexpected tech issues. I once plugged in a new drive and fixed a bunch of weird client problems instantly!

I compartmentalize my cables using separate bins, with each bin color-coded for easy access. I don't have a mobile setup since I usually work at a single location, but organizing by type makes it easy for quick grabs when needed. Might work for you too!
