How do I transfer Windows 10 from an old HDD to a new SSD?

I just got my hands on an old gaming computer from a friend who upgraded, and I'm trying to move my operating system over to a new SSD. I've been looking for clear instructions or a good guide to help with this process. I'm considering getting an M.2 2280 SSD, but I'm unsure how to proceed. Would it be better to buy Windows 11 or might a Linux installation be a better alternative? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Before going through the transfer, check what motherboard you have for compatibility. It can make a difference when installing new hardware. Also, clean installs help in avoiding clutter from the old system.

Honestly, if you can, a fresh install of the OS is usually the best way to go. You can just back up your important files and reinstall Windows 10 on the new SSD. It often saves a lot of headaches compared to transferring everything over. But if you really want to transfer, applications like Macrium Reflect can help if the new SSD is the same size or bigger than the HDD.
