Hey everyone! I'm new to Linux and I'm trying out Zorin OS on my all-AMD setup with a Ryzen 5900X, RX 6900 XT, 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, and an X570 ACE motherboard. However, I'm encountering freezing issues, especially during low GPU load. It runs fine during stress tests, but I'm not sure why it's freezing. I've already attempted using Mainline Kernels to get a newer version of Zorin, but I ran into compatibility issues with the AMDGPU driver and had to roll it back. I tried using LACT tuning, which has helped so far, but it feels like more of a temporary fix. What should I do next to resolve these freezing problems?

As a newcomer, I'd strongly advise against Ubuntu LTS or its derivatives when dealing with new hardware. I faced similar issues when I switched to newer hardware and moved away from Ubuntu LTS, and I found distributions like Fedora and openSUSE Tumbleweed to work much better with updated drivers. Be cautious with AI suggestions for troubleshooting; make sure to understand everything before entering commands. Stick to learning the system and take the time to choose a distro that's more in line with your hardware's needs.
Your experience is pretty common with Zorin since it’s based on an older Ubuntu version, which means the kernel and driver support can lag behind for newer GPUs like yours. It's worth checking if your BIOS is up to date, as outdated BIOS settings might contribute to weird freezes. I recommend trying to update your kernel and Mesa via the normal way instead of using the Mainline builds. Also, check your RAM settings; unstable formats can easily masquerade as GPU issues. If the freezing continues, consider logging errors during a freeze to see if they point to power or management issues. If possible, switching to a more current distribution like Fedora or even Arch-based systems could save you the hassle you're currently facing with Zorin.
That's a solid point! I was tweaking my RAM settings and had issues too, even if my benchmarks said everything was fine. Maybe I should rethink my distro choice as well.
Thanks for that advice! I’m debating between Fedora and staying on Zorin now.
I'd recommend checking out more updated Fedora-based distros like Bazzite or Ultramarine for better hardware support. The current version of Zorin is based on older stacks and may not have the latest drivers. If Zorin becomes a hassle, these alternatives might be the right choice for you, especially for keeping compatibility with your hardware.
Thanks for the heads-up! I was thinking about using Zorin on my mom’s older laptop, but I'll reconsider that. Her setup might benefit from something fresher, like Fedora.
Honestly, I think a fresh install could help clear up any lingering issues from the previous configuration. Sometimes, if things have been misconfigured, starting over is the easiest path. Ensure you're installing with the newer kernel where applicable. Also, consider distros like Fedora that come with more recent kernels and better GPU support right out of the box.

I hear you! It's tempting to use AI for quick solutions, but I’ve noticed that I still have to understand what I'm doing anyway. I'll probably try something more straightforward for Linux.
